We tried stars. We tried thumbs up / thumbs down. We tried just saying "yeah it was fine." None of it worked. So we built our own.
Why 3D glasses?
The RetroCult is about the physical, tactile experience of digging through the past. 3D glasses feel like the right mascot for that — simultaneously retro, a little goofy, and deeply tied to an era a lot of our finds come from. Plus 3D glasses are just plain COOL.
The five levels
Skip It
We drove here, we walked around, and we left with nothing. More importantly, we left with a feeling. These are the places that feel more like a storage unit clearance than a curated experience. Prices are high relative to what's on offer, organization is nonexistent, and the booths all look like the same pile moved from space to space. Save your gas.
Weak
Something is here, but not enough of it. Maybe one or two booths worth exploring while the rest is furniture — and knick-knack purgatory. A Weak rating doesn't mean don't go — it means adjust your expectations and maybe pair it with something else in the same trip.
Decent
This is the average antique mall or vintage store. Clean, reasonably priced, real inventory. You'll probably find something. You won't feel like you discovered anything. Decent malls are the backbone of any collecting circuit and they deserve respect even if they don't deserve the drive.
Worth It
This is where it gets fun. A Good Dig mall has booths that feel personally curated. Prices are fair. There's depth — you can come back three months later and find it's completely different. We have a few of these on a regular rotation.
Essential
These are rare. An Essential antique mall or vintage store is one where you walk in and immediately feel the potential in the air. The kind of place where you find something you didn't know you were looking for. These get written up, filmed, and talked about. When we give a five, we mean it.
What we don't rate
We don't factor in parking, hours, or whether the bathroom was clean. We rate the hunt. Everything else is noise.
